By the time May rolls around, turkey season takes on a different feel. For some hunters, weeks of early mornings and hard hunting have started to wear them down. Others, though, can’t get enough and want to chase gobblers right up until the final day. I’ve often found myself somewhere in between. As the season drags on, the fatigue sets in, and the motivation starts to fade. Then, with only a few days left, something sparks that fire again, only to have the season come to an end just as the excitement returns.
This year felt much like the seasons I’ve experienced in the past. During the final week of Missouri’s turkey season, I hunted three straight days without hearing much gobbling or seeing a single bird. Then, during the last two days, it was almost as if the turkeys caught a second wind, too. Gobblers were sounding off again, birds were grouped up, and the woods suddenly felt alive. To make matters worse, two friends of mine had traveled north to hunt Merriam’s turkeys, and the photos and texts they sent of successful hunts only fueled the fire even more. By that point, I wasn’t ready for the season to end. Have you ever had that same feeling?

Missouri – The Midwestern Sweet Spot
If you had to design a state for May turkey hunting, Missouri would be hard to beat. The season typically runs a week or two into May, so you may want to put the Show Me State at the beginning of the list. The state’s mix of hardwood ridges, pasture ground, and agricultural edges creates ideal turkey habitat.
By this point in the season, most hens are nesting, which leaves gobblers more responsive, especially late morning. Public land opportunities are excellent, particularly in areas managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Missouri has had a strong turkey population statewide for many years. In the past two years, hatches have been good, resulting in lots of two-year-old gobblers. This state is also well known for its ample public land access.
During the first week of May, the peak gobbling activity is late mornings, perfect for those hunters who want to sleep in a bit after a long season.
Pennsylvania – Tradition Meets Late Season
Few states carry the turkey hunting tradition that Pennsylvania does, and by May, things start to line up in the hunter’s favor. The PA season runs through most of the month, giving hunters plenty of time to capitalize on gobblers during the peak of breeding season. Typically, northern states such as Pennsylvania are a few weeks behind in the breeding season, compared to most southern and Midwest states.
Pennsylvania is also known for a vast public land system, including big timber tracts and rolling Appalachian ridges, which creates classic setups for late season birds. By this point, hunting pressure has dropped off across the country. Pennsylvania residents will still be actively hunting, while many out-of-state hunters may begin tapering off after spending a month or more in the woods and wrapping up their seasons.

The folks in Pennsylvania remind me of some of the classic southern states. Hunters are deep rooted in their turkey hunting culture, and they take it seriously. They are also attractive to out-of-state hunters because of the extensive public land access across the state.
As for the turkeys themselves. Late season gobblers respond well to subtle tactics, giving hunters fun and exciting hunts to wrap up their season on a successful note.
Minnesota – Late Season Opportunity
Minnesota has been one of those sleeper states up until the last few years, and it seems that hunters are flocking there for mature bucks in the fall and gobbling toms in the spring. When it comes to May turkey hunting, Minnesota is another state with a season that stretches into late May, and it offers one of the best chances to chase birds when most other states are winding down.
The combination of big woods and agricultural land provides diverse hunting setups, and like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New York, and Maine, the northern states hit their stride late, giving hunters an extended season.

Longer season, stretching from mid-April through the end of May. Perfect late season dates for those traveling turkey hunters, looking for their next adventure state. They also have slightly less competition from other hunters, compared to other popular turkey hunting states. For hunters hunting late into the season, the birds are still actively searching for hens, resulting in action packed hunting.
Kansas – Stay Aggressive In May
Kansas offers a unique May turkey hunting experience. The open terrain and scattered timber create a run-and-gun hunter’s playground. By May, many gobblers have transitioned away from large flocks and can be easier to isolate.
Western and central Kansas can be particularly productive, where visibility helps to locate birds from a distance. Again, like the other highlighted states, their season runs through the end of May. This makes it an excellent option for Midwest hunters looking to extend their season with a short late season road trip.

Kansas is known for its open terrain, which is ideal for covering ground. For hunters who want to see a lot of turkeys, Kansas has a strong Rio Grande turkey population, where seeing flocks of a hundred birds or more is not uncommon. The good population of birds and open terrain make for great aggressive hunting tactics.
South Dakota – Prairie Meets Timber
South Dakota rounds out the list with a blend of prairie hunting and classic Black Hills setups. May is prime time here, especially in the western part of the state where Merriam’s turkeys roam.
Like Kansas and their Rios, the chances of seeing large flocks of Merriam’s are highly possible. The later timing means birds are still active, and the scenery alone makes it worth the trip. I recently received photos from a good friend of mine from Missouri, who took a nice Merriam’s in North Dakota. The beautiful black hills in the background simply help tell the story of the hunt.
You may have to knock on some doors to gain access to private land, because public land does get hunted hard, but you will eventually find someone who says, ” Yes, ” and after that, the hunt is on!

May offers prime timing for hunters chasing Merriam’s turkeys, whether you’re hoping to harvest one of the most beautiful birds in the country or check the final box on your Grand Slam. The diverse terrain options allow for excellent turkey hunting and some of the most scenic views you will find. This is another state that receives a little less pressure compared to early season states from public land hunting.
May might not have the hype of opening week, but seasoned hunters know it’s one of the best times to tag a longbeard. Fewer hunters, more predictable birds, and extended seasons create the perfect storm for success. If you’re willing to adapt and maybe even travel, states like Missouri and Nebraska can keep your season alive long after others have called it quits. After all, sometimes the best opportunities come after most hunters have already gone home.
